This is a difficult subject.

You ask your girlfriend a straightforward question such as:

“Do you mind if I go to the pub with my mates to get pissed?”

She says “no”, which, on the face of it is excellent news.

However on returning from the pub things don’t seem quite the same. Your girlfriend isn’t talking to you. Why? you ask yourself.

“What’s wrong?” you ask her.

“Nothing” she replies. Now you smell a rat because clearly something is wrong.

What is wrong is that she didn’t want you to go to the pub in the first place. But how were you to know? You did, after all, ask her if she minded and she said she didn’t. You might as well have not bothered asking in the first place!

Solution

This is an absolutely normal and commonplace occurrence. Don’t believe her when she says she doesn’t mind; either use your instincts to work out whether you can get away with it without too much grief, or take the risk but be prepared for the consequences.
